The collection of crayfishes (Astacidae) which was entirely identified by Prof. Walter Faxon, during 1883 and 1884, has been carefully gone over, in order to place the specimens in good condition. Fresh alcohol was added to the jars, and the latter were labeled on the outside. The collection has been arranged in one of the wall cases on the south side of the bird hall.

A beginning has been made toward placing the records of the department in complete order, a work which has hitherto been much neglected, for the reason that other and more important matters have always demanded the entire attention of the assistants. A list of all the catalogues, notes, and other papers of value, on file in the department, has been made to facilitate reference. New catalogues are partially completed to show exactly the location of all Fish Commission materials which have passed through this department, and a list is now being made of all the determined specimens received from the same sources.
