New York City This is a color infrared photograph of New York and its suburbs, taken at nadir with a 250 mm lens. Central Park (1) is Manhattan Island's dominant visual, but street patterns in Brooklyn (3), bridges and piers are easily visible as well. Densely wooded zones occur just north of the city (within 10 miles) along the Hudson River (2). The cliffs along the Hudson, and a long-established state park system have precluded development along its shores. Extensive and expensive development along the coastal barrier beaches (4) was heavily damaged during strong storms earlier in 1993, raising the issue of limiting such development and the rebuilding of damaged property on these low-lying shorelines.
