The Andes are still forming today. The are the result of the subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate along the Peru-Chile Trench. Mountain building has resulted from enormous volumes of magma from the subducted oceanic plate, not unlike the formation of the Sierra Nevadas in the western US.
