• When I was growing up, I had the advantage of encouraging, supportive (+ patient) parents, + 2 very special science teachers as mentors. They gave me confidence in my abilities, [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] + gave me the momentum I needed coming out of H.S. to plow ahead through a phyics [[physics]] maj. in college, + on to a PHD in grad school.
→ Without the extra momentum, I might easily have fallen out of the pipeline, [[strikethrough]] + [[/strikethrough]] never gotten a PhD, [[strikethrough]] + [[/strikethrough]] never become an astronaut [+ never had the chance to ride a rocket into space [[strikethrough]], to float weightless hundreds of miles above Earth, or gaze down our planet from above]. • I've been working for more than a decade to encourage young women to study math + sci. Today, I'm proud to be standing next to these [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] allies [[strikethrough]] th [[/strikethrough]] in the crusade to announce the release of this important report.
• Balancing the equation offers a blueprint for systematic change to invite more girls + women into the sciences. The report's recommendations — from offering hands-on research opportunities, to increasing the # of women in leadership positions — will help ensure that our nation benefits from the talent, the intelligence, + the creativity that girls + women bring to the sciences.
