But then ....

- In 5th-8th grade, we start to lose them
   - Lose both boys and girls
   - But we lose girls in greater numbers

- Why? Not aptitude or interest
   - Lingering stereotypes
   - Subtle messages kids internalize
   - Kids don't see relevance of science

The Good News ....

- We don't need to convert kids to science
- There are many ways to sustain & support their interest
- We know what works!
  - Show kids science is creative, collaborative & fun
  - Show kids who scientists are and what they do
  - Show kids how science is relevant to their world, and how they
can have an impact through science.

(Especially true for girls, but effective for all students)
