in Paris on the subject. The meeting will help define educational objectives and projects for ISY in time for the 1989 SAFISY meeting. Isaac Revah explained that CNES would like to devote some time during ISY to the training of scientists and engineers in lesser developed countries. The training might take the form of short courses on specific aspects of space science involving students and professors from many countries. He mentioned that CNES will look toward the Panel of Experts on Education and Applications, which might include some participants from the meeting in Paris, for advice in this area. Kerstin Fredga encouraged the SAFISY members to consider educational programs that actually involve students in the conduct of ISY activities and not merely instruct them through the traditional lecture format. Marco Antonio Raupp invited SAFISY members to support the idea of a conference in Brazil on the benefits of space to lesser developed countries. He explained that Brazil has some experience in hosting training courses for remote sensing. The Chairman indicated that education and applications is an area of ISY which can be developed in close contact with ICSU. Sir John Kendrew agreed that ICSU would support such activity. The Chairman then received consensus of the members in asking CNES to proceed with education plans on behalf of SAFISY and to take the lead in establishing the Panel of Experts on Education and Applications for review by the members. Space Science SAFISY members recognized the contribution of IACG in coordinating international solar-terrestrial science programs which will enhance the observance of ISY. Lennard Fisk asked SAFISY to consider forming a third panel -- a Panel of Experts on Space Science -- to suggest activities for ISY in areas other than solar-terrestrial and Earth science to be undertaken given the existing resources and planning of SAFISY member organizations. SAFISY invited COSPAR to take the lead in forming such a panel for review by the members. Ian Axford accepted the invitation for COSPAR and agreed to help define ISY activities in the other disciplines of space science. The Chairman asked COSPAR to report on its progress at the 1989 SAFISY meeting. Public Relations Lennard Fisk suggested that ISY will be successful if the general public learns the value of space research. He explained that the US-ISY Association is doing some public outreach within the United
