Women in Science (WINS) Meeting
Tuesday, February 6, 1996

Present: Paula Levin, Tam O'Shaughnessy, Sally Ride, Traci Verardo.

Reports: Review of Paula's and Traci's notes from last meetings.

Sally gave a brief account of her conversation with Jean Boorgaurd at Phelps-Stokes, and said that Jean is still receptive to the idea of continuing the WINS Project. Sally will forward her materials including Tam's outline of last quarter's accomplishments, notes from Days 1& 2 from the November meeting, a short summary from Sally, and a one year plan and budget. The summary may include a brief description of Dorothy Terman's projects, with titles, and an outline of what may be accomplished through Bud's course. Paula and Sally will review Tam's outline and hopefully get something out in the mail next week.

Traci gave a brief update on researching gender equity projects around the country. One of the most helpful resources is the Cal Tech Women's Center's Home Page, with statistics on admissions, background information, and links to other resources from women in science. Specific information on programs should be forthcoming.

Following up on an idea discussed at a preview meeting, the question of whether WINS could create a disseminate brochures, flyers, information with NSTA or NCTM was discussed. Paula suggested a "fact or fiction" type of brochure that challenges the readers presumptions about math and science. It was discussed that NSTA already has a number of venues to disseminate information: teacher conferences, regional meetings, national conferences, direct mail, etc. Perhaps WINS could piggyback on one of the existing methods of distribution. Traci and Paula will contact NSTA and NCTM to find out what sorts of materials they already send out and what they might be willing to incorporate. It was suggested to try to have a draft of brochure ready by the NCTM conference.
