Le Dear [[Emma?]] & children,
I am very glad that you received my letter and that you are all in good health. We are at [[Montmartre?]] and since this big drive is over now and we are not connected just at present with an army it will not have [[any one?]] for you to know that this is where we are. Every thing here is like civil life as far as the town is conserned there are many soulders passing most of the time whom we take care of, other wise we would not know that a war was going on when we first arrived we did not relize [[realize]] the position we were in

confusion there was a mixture of the ally.[[?]] to the [[?]] on straying back from the line lost on bewildered from shocks. if it had not for our first experience, we may have felt the excitement more but if all being so new we thought it the regular thing we know now that it was a very trying moment. at the time this vilage was completely shot up. an all the the civilians gone, we know now that every precaution had been taken for a retreat and we may have been in the gun line of the French, Amer & Eng. was so terific that the [[?]] had to back up
