there were shells. there were shells filling every place around us, and it was only god that saved the few that were left here, all the civilian had left, most of the [[?]] had been called to other places and for a few hours it seemed we had been left to ourselves. the wounded were just faring in the courtyard of the [[?]] was over flowing, shoes that looked of things. They could be moved were offered on at once. that too serious we left to themselves in the last moments  poor boys. I [[?]] + I was here + them all the time day + night the fight was so terrific for the first few days and so many wouldn't on all the roads that men + ambulances would get last in the grate struggle + confusion on, consequently, we would hand the wounded and tuned out men drifting in from all the different armies.
