Pacific Science Center

The Regents considered the proposal of the Pacific Science Center Foundation of Seattle that the Smithsonian seek legislative authorization to accept title to the buildings and to assume responsibility for the administration of the Center.

The Regents concluded after full discussion that the proposal should not be approved or disapproved. Instead, the Board authorized the Secretary to offer assistance to the Foundation in negotiations with the Property Management and Disposal Service of the General Service Administration for the transfer of title to the real estate to the Foundation. 

Purchase of 171 acres of land at Fort Pierce, Florida

On April 15, 1971, the Smithsonian purchased approximately 171 acres adjacent to the Institution of oceanographic operations at Fort Pierce, Florida. This land was desirable to protect the Marine Science Center operations and to integrate the Center's estuarine and oceanic ecological studies. The Harbor Branch Foundation plans to purchase this property from the Smithsonian in November 1971 when the Foundation expected to have ample funds. It was 

VOTED that the Board of Regents does hereby ratify the contract to purchase and subsequent transfer by deed in fee simple of the 171 acres, more or less, located immediately north of the Marine Science Center canal, Fort Pierce, Florida, and approves the agreement to transfer the same to the Harbor Branch Foundation.
