William A. M. Burden
The Secretary.

Report of the Executive Committee (Permanent Committee)

Mr. Webb reported that the Chancellor had suggested that the Executive Committee (Permanent Committee) should serve in a more active role in considering the affairs of the Institution. The Chancellor commented that in consideration of the limits of his time, it would be most helpful if the Executive Committee (Permanent Committee) would meet more frequently and predigest significant matters to be presented with recommendations to the Regents for final action.

Dr. Haskins had to decline continuing as Chairman because of his many commitments which occur outside of Washington. He will however remain as a member of the Executive Committee (Permanent Committee). The Chancellor prevailed upon James Webb to accept the Chairmanship of the Executive Committee (Permanent Committee) of the Board of Regents, and was grateful for Mr. Webb's willingness to set aside a number of his other interests so as to concentrate more time on the business of the Smithsonian Institution.

The Chancellor envisions the responsibility of the Chairman of the Executive Committee (Permanent Committee) as dealing on a continuing basis with matters of particular concern to the Board of Regents. This would preclude waiting during the intervals between meetings for any actions required by the Board.
