purposes and the Bongos(antelope) occupying the south end of the building were moved to a vacant paddock.

The remodeling consists of modifying indoor cages with safety glass and mechanical and electrical changes to upgrade the air conditioning.  The work is planned in three phases:

Phase I- Preparation of two south cages with air conditioning modifications, special glass enclosures and lighting modifications.  Construction of outdoor garden.

Phase II- Remodeling of north cage and finishing of south cages and public viewing area.  Completion of indoor work.

Phase III- Regrading of yards, utility modifications and landscape work.  Completion of outdoor work.

Accurate estimates of cost cannot be made until working drawings are complete.  However, the following order of magnitude estimate is offered as a guide to probable costs:

Phase I $65,000 to $75,000

Phase II $125,000 to $150,000

Phase III $100,000 to $150,000

Professional fees (A/E design and supervision) not to exceed $60,000.  Contingencies and "in-house" support of construction activities $40,000.  Phase I is nearing completion and design work for Phase II is underway.  Total completion is expected by September - October 1972.

Congressional approval has been received for expenditure of funds in the amount of $500,000 (previously appropriated for work not undertaken).
