Authorization of Funds for the John F. Kennedy Center

The House agreed to amendments offered by Representative Gray authorizing appropriations to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for fiscal year 1972 of $1.5 million for the costs of "maintaining and operating the non-performing arts functions" of the Center, and an amendment providing that these services shall be provided by the National Park Service in fiscal year 1973.

The National Park Service would provide maintenance, security, information, interpretation, janitorial, and all other services necessary to the non-performing arts function of the Kennedy Center.

Roger Stevens commented in private that he could work out a satisfactory agreement with the National Park Service to define more clearly the respective roles of the Kennedy Center and the National Park Service. He cited as one example of the need for clarification that guided tours of the theatres should be under the Kennedy Center rather than the Park Service.
