[[underlined]] Drug Exhibit [[/underlined]]
Mr. Ripley reported that the Smithsonian Institution will open "Drugs: A Special Exhibition" on May 19, 1972. This exhibit is designed to explore sympathetically and factually the concern of many elements in our society with the problems of drug use and misuse, and to provide balanced information on the drug substances in use, their effects, their treatment, their history, and the steps being taken by our society both privately and publicly to overcome the problem. The exhibit has been prepared with consultation and assistance from many organizations, including the President's Special Action Office for Drug Abuse Prevention, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.
The Secretary stated that the exhibit has been financed by both private gifts, contracts, and grants as well as public support, all totaling approximately $400,000. It is anticipated that the National Institute of Mental Health will provide additional funds which might be used for seminars during the coming year.
The exhibit is designed for travel and will be shown in other cities and locations after December 1972. Inquiries have already been received from Chicago and Seattle.
