to the collecting of marine specimens and obtained very valuable results. The Greely party to Lady Franklin Bay, from 1881 to 1884, was also successful in procuring many specimens, but, as is well known, it became necessary to abandon everything of this character on the retreat southward. The naturalist, Dr. Pavy, was among those who perished. In preparation for this station, the so-called Howgate Expedition, with Mr. Ludwig Kumlien as naturalist, was sent into the same region in 1877 and '78, and brought back a small collection of marine invertebrates from Cumberland Gulf and the west coast of Greenland.
