59 The State Department.—— Numerous important collections have been received from American consuls and special agents of this department stationed in foreign countries. Among these may be mentioned Mr. John Xantus, who was located at Manzanillo, west coast of Mexico, during 1862; and Col. Nicholas Pike at the Mauritius Islands, and Col. A.B. Steinberger at the Samoan Islands in more recent years. Dr. C.B.R. Kennerly, surgeon and naturalist of the Survey of the Northwestern Boundary Line, under Archibald Campbell, Commissioner; from 1857 to 1861, made extensive collections of marine invertebrates at the mouth of Frazer's river.
Transcription Notes:
John Xantus is mentioned on a previous page where his name is clearly Xantus, not Kantus
