United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries. - No other explorations have added so largely to the stores of this department as have those of the United States Fish Commission during the past sixteen years. The accessions made by this survey possess, moreover, an especial interest from the fact that they include some of the most important results yet obtained in the line of deep-sea research, in which the Fish Commission has been actively engaged. Although having as its primary object the solution of certain practical problems concerning the American fisheries, the collecting of large quantities of animal life from the sea bottom has been an essential feature of its investigations of the numerous fishing grounds that border our coasts.
