beginning, and during the first two years most of the dredging and trawling was done by hand from a small sail boat or steam launch, though the services of a revenue cutter were occasionally obtained, through the courtesy of the Treasury Department. The third year, a small naval tug, the Bluelight, was placed at the disposition of the Commission, and in 1877 she was replaced by a larger naval tug, the Speedwell. In 1880, the steamer Fish Hawk, built expressly for the Commission was first available for use, and, in 1883, the substantial seagoing steamer Albatross was added to the Fish Commission fleet. These steamers have been commanded by competent naval officers, whose services have been of the greatest benefit to the Commission. Capt. L.A.
