had been confined to a narrow area, bordering the shore to a distance not more than 40 or 45 miles from land, although these limits were exceeded in several instances. 

At the eastward, they discovered most of the region lying at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy; and from Casco Bay, Maine, southward, to the mouth of the Connecticut river in Long Island Sound, they formed a continuous series, without a single important break. Much of the coast included within these limits support an exceedingly rich fauna, the basis of its valuable fishing grounds. Shore collecting was carried on in the vicinity of all the shore stations, and a complete representation was thus attained of the entire marine fauna, between the littoral zone and a depth of 175 fathoms.
