The attention of the Commissioner had been called to a strange edible fish, that was said to occur in immense numbers on the inner edge of the Gulf Stream slope, south of Martha's Vineyard and Block Island, and the Fish Hawk was detailed to investigate its range and abundance, and the character of its feeding grounds. Three trips were made during the first season and their results far surpassed all expectations, the variety and richness of the marine fauna occupying the abrupt edge of the continental slope, exceeding any that had hitherto been discovered upon the American coast, if not
