1883, and has been continued with only brief interruptions to date. This steamer is fitted with the best appliances for all kinds of hydrographic, fishery and biological researches, and is unquestionably the most perfectly equipped exploring steamer in the world. During the warmer part of the year her field of operations is toward the north, and during the winder and early spring, toward the south. During the summer of 1885, she cruised to the eastward as far as the eastern edge of the Grand Bank of Newfoundland, and in the summer of 1886 intends to visit the Flemish Cap which is even more distant. Her explorations have so far covered all the principal fishing banks off the coasts of the British Provinces and the entire eastern and southern coasts of the United States from the inner fishing grounds to the deepest waters
