from the shore and shallow waters of the southern Atlantic coast, in 1880, and, during the same year, Prof. D.S. Jordan and Mr. Charles Gilbert made a similar collection on the western coast, representing the region from Puget Sound to Lower California. Mr. V.N. Edwards, who has been in the permanent employ of the Commission at Wood's Holl, since 1871, has sent in every year valuable lots of specimens, collected at seasons when that station is not visited by the regular party. Mr. Silas Stearns, at Pensacola, Fla., and Mr. E.G. Blackford, at New York, have been constant contributors through the Commission.
