Stimpson, whose name is closely linked with the early welfare of this department, was also an indefatigable collector, and but for the destruction of the Museum of the Chicago Academy of Sciences, in 1871, the results of his explorations would now occupy a large amount of our space. His connection with the North Pacific Exploring Expedition has already been described, but between 1850 and 1871, much of his time was spent upon the eastern coast of the United States between Grand Manan and Southern Florida, partly under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution, and a portion of his collections from that extensive region would eventually have come to Washington.
