Chas. Fred Hartt, of this country, from 1874 to 1878, made very large and important collections of marine animals, especially in the coral reef regions bordering the central Brazilian coast, and in 1882 a fine set of the corals and many specimens belonging to other groups of marine invertebrates were obtained for this Museum, by exchange with the Brazilian authorities.    

The fine series of corals exhibited at the Centennial Exhibition, Philadelphia, in 1876, by the Bermuda Commissioners, was afterwards donated to the National Museum, and more recently, a miscellaneous collection from the same island, made by Mr. F.M. Hamlin, has been presented by Wesleyan University, of Middletown, Conn. Collections of coral have been received from Prof. J.M. Langston, collected at the island of Hayti,
