September 13th 1865

Know all men by these presents that I, Milton W. Shipley of Maryotts Ville [[Marriotsville today]], Howard County, State of Maryland, held and firmly bound to the United States of America, in the sum of (200.$) Two Hundred dollars for the payment of which I bind myself, my heirs, Executors and Administrators, firmly by these presents in this Contract, that I am to furnish the person[[strikethrough]]s[[/strikethrough]] whose name [[strikethrough]]s[[/strikethrough]] is subjoined (free Laborer) quarters full substantial and healthy Rations and all necessary supplies and attendance (not Medical) in case of sickness, and the amount set opposite his name per month, monthly, during the Continuation of this Contract and it is expressly understood that (25%) twenty five percent of the amount of said wages are to be retained by said Milton W. Shipley until the termination of this Contract when said 25 percent shall be paid in full to said party. This Contract for one month, and at the termination of said month, should the said parties still remain together then this contract shall remain in full force, and otherwise [[strikethrough]][[??]][[/strikethrough]] to end on 13th day of October 1865, to be broken only by mutual consent.  

Samuel Green 25 ys, 10$ [[ten dollars]] per month for one year -

The strikethrough text is still pending transcription. I could not read the longer strikethrough phrase. I was also uncertain about the overwriting of the words "month" and "year". It wasn't clear to me which word was the final choice for this contract. I thought that the final choice was "year" and the the word "month" was a drafting error.
