Know all men by these presents that I Joshua H Shipley Agent for John G Pearce of Carroll County, Maryland, held and firmly bound to the United States of America in the sum of two hundred ($200) Dollars for the payment of which I bind myself, my heir, executor and Administrator firmly by these presents in this contract, that I am to furnish the persons whose names are subjoined (freed laborer) quarters, full substantial and healthy rations, all necessary attendance and supplies in case of sickness, and the amount set opposite their respective names per month during the continuation of this contract. And that 25 per cent of said amount of wages to be retained by said employer until the termination of this contract, then to be paid in full and the said (Shipley) to pay all expense of transportation from Washington to his residence free of cost to said Employee -

This contract to be broken only by mutual consent.
