Articles of Agreement, made and concluded this   day of 3rd day of August, 1866, between John Johnson of Washington D.C., County of Washington of Wash' City, party of the first part, and G. W.  Joy, of Washington, County of Washington, [[strikethrough]] State [[/strikethrough]] of Dist of Columbia, party of the second part.

The said John Johnson freed laborer, agree to enter the service of the said G. W. Joy as Laborer to learn Blacksmiths trade,and, also, that he will faithfully and diligently apply himself and perform the duties of Laborer to lean trade, on the Premises of said G. W. Joy, and answer all the reasonable requirements of the said G. W. Joy  for, and during the space of 3 Years, from the 3rd day of August, 1866; and he further agree that his employer shall retain one-fourth his monthly wages until the expiration of his term of service.

And the said G. W. Joy, hereby agrees to employ him (the said freed laborer) for the term of 3 Years, as aforesaid, and to pay for his services the sum set opposite his respective name, [[strikethrough]] per month — (one fourth of which shall be retained each month,) and all stoppages and arrearages promptly paid at the expiration of respective terms of service, to wit: [[/strikethrough]]

John Johnson, to learn blacksmithing to work 3 years to receive (4$) four dollars per week to pay board. And on the 1st of January and June of each year to receive cash, Jany 20$ and June 10$. At the end of the term of amass [?] 50$ in cash in equal monthly payments; and the said G. W. Joy, further agrees to furnish said freed laborer above named, [[strikethrough]]quarters, fuel, full substantial and healthy rations, and [[/strikethrough]] all necessary medical attendance and supplies in case of sickness, to the amt of four dollars per week in case his sickness should not exceed the period of [[strikethrough]] one month [[/strikethrough]] two weeks [[strikethrough]] at any one time [[?]] in addition to the compensation above named, and that he will assist and encourage efforts for the education of the children of his employees; and, also, that he will make no charge for liquor furnished his employees. And it is further agreed by the said G. W. Joy that in case he at any time fails to perform his part of this agreement, he will pay to the said laborer the full sum of One Hundred dollars, as fixed, agreed and liquidated damages.

If it shall be mutually desirable to annul this contract before the expiration of the term agreed upon, it shall be done only in the presence and with the concurrence of such officer of the Freedman's Bureau, (or other authority) as may have immediate jurisdiction in this matter in the district wherein such parties reside.
