To Col Samuel Thomas Commissioner of the Freedmans bureau for the State of Mississippi

The petition of Henry Chotard a citizen of Natchez Missi respectfully represents that he is the owner of a plantation in the county of Issaquena state aforesaid containing by estimation about eight hundred acres and situated in the extreme south west corner of said county and known by the name of River Side. Petitioner states that said plantation was taken possession of by the United States Authorities as abandoned and rented to a man by the name of Jones for the present year. Petitioner further states that said place was not abandoned in the meaning of the act of Congress on the subject. Petitioner is an old man seventy six years of age and has for many years resided in the city of Natchez. His [[one son?]] and agent were compelled to leave said plantation and carry off the hands in consequence of high water in 1863.
