Dr. C. W. Richmond

Dear Sir

I got back here last week from my trip to the Barahona district in S.W. of the Republic. As regards everything but plants it was disappointing. Was there 2 months. Much or most of the time in the Bahoruco Mts. 1500-4,000 ft. up (I saw nothing of the "thrush" I saw to the westward in the same range in Hayti 2 years ago.) But (have got a pair of the solitain. Am not sure they are the same Cory got above Jamel 40 years ago. & they dont look quite like those collected in the Central Cordillera. They were very common above 3000 feet on the hills about [[strikethrough]] above [[/strikethrought]] Polo, but as the males were not singing on our arrival there we could get none at first - luckily just before our departure from Polo, they commenced to sing & I got a pair -) [[male symbol]] badly shot.

Saw or heard nothing else of much account in the hills. 11 miles from Barahona at Cabral is a large lake, Rincon, of fresh water - surrounded by vast reed beds & marshes (thousands of acres) - by far the largest place of the sort on the island. I had hoped for some kind of reed or grass sparrow, bunting, warbler or something or other. Nothing of the kind could be found - (Plenty of Maryland Yellow Throats 1) and other warblers, & but no small rails were seen. (Tho Sora rail was plentiful). (Florida [[strikethrough]] galin [[/strikethrough]] & martinique galinules, coots & Jacanas were plentiful.) only ducks seen
