and can actually show each mechanic what and how to do each item. This in my opinion is the most needed.
** 6) Materials of Instruction. From my past experience it is possible to ask the different manufacturers to supply to the school, such cut away sections used in the automobile shows in America, and such manufacturer of repair tools or parts manufacturers to supply materials of instruction. The cut away sections, or parts maybe purchased from the other manufacturers at a much better rate.
** 7) It is further suggested that you get in touch with my brother, Mr. K. A. L. Suez, now acting as consulting engineer to the Universal [[strikethrough] Sale [[/strikethrough]] Trading Company. He has had much experience in this capacity, and as Service Manager for General Motors in China some years ago. it maybe of mutual advantage to discuss with him the possibility of cooperating with his assembly plant. Thus both materials and assembly [[strikethrough]] maybe [[/strikethrough]] methods maybe [[strikethrough]] better [[/strikethrough]] more easily made available. However, I should suggest that you communicate with him. As my brother is also a friend of Mr. Lee Yin-son when he was in Hkg.
I believe, your project would be a very good thing for China and that you will be able to carry it through very soon. Your proposed intention of train so many students maybe a rather difficult thing.
A number of the Government training schools, such as the one you intend to start, are in operation in China, but handicapped by lack of funds and consequently personnel.
In some of the government schools the students get paid while in training, varying from ten to twenty dollars a month depending upon their standing and their ability to work.
In my past experience it is possible to teach a student to drive with about thirty gallons of gasoline --that would cost about US$60.00 each. The instructional staff for about 60 students would be about US$150.00 per month, or about 1800.00 per year. Buildings would be about 2000.00. Clearing ground, laying out driving course, and other sanitary necessities 1000.00. Educational materials fixed 7500.00 and replacements, such as pins, nuts, bolts, screws, emery cloth, grinding compound, etc. 2500.00. A total of say about 20.00.00 per year would be necessary. The maximum number of students that maybe attempted should not exceed say 120 students. The students should be by rotation, not [[strikethrough]] he one [[/strikethrough]] year by year, class by class.
However, their may much saving in expenses, if this rotation may carried out, as half of this sum, 10,000.00 is in fixed expenses, therefore, for second year only 10,000.00 is required. If however it is necessary to train all the students all at once it maybe necessary to raise say 150,000.00 of which after this batch of students the materials will no longer be useful for training unless it is continued for another two years so that the equipment maybe used to the fullest extent and be allowed to run the full life of the equipment. The rotation method of training may only require say 100.000.00 for three years and train about 600 students.
These students maybe distributed to such organizations as Red Cross, and others, of semi-government organizations, where most good can be made use of, and further the number of students become available is not too great all at once, where it maybe difficult to place at the same time.
With these points in mind, you maybe be able to judge for yourself better what each item I have mentioned is worth.
Hoping you have a very successfully coming year.
Yours truly,
Robert K. W. Suez
