Sept. 29, 1962.
Dearest Mom,

I'm so glad you received my second letter. I know you are very curious to know why I asked about Uncle's divident. I need the money for something. First let me give the reasons. When I was in Hong Kong, I heard you and uncle talk about him getting the divident at the year year. I was [[strikethrough]] n [[/strikethrough]] thinking, since he's getting the money, I'm sure he can spare a few hundred (U.S.) for me. So I planned on going to New York for Christmas. Now I want to ask your permission. Please, may I go to New York for Christmas? I [[strikethrough]] show [[/strikethrough]] hope you will consent to the answer more. If I go, I know I'll have fun. Please think it over and tell me as soon as possible. I have calculated the amount needed. The plane ticket costs about $250, the hotel less than $100. So altogether, I'll need $500 (the rest to get some new winter clothes as New York is very good in the winter). I'll be going down with Maggie. I can look Mary (Milan) up in Conn. as the boys have come down there & I'll be able to visit your friends there (also Uncle Frank) so please think this over carefully because my whole vacation depends on you. Remember last X'mas you let me go? Well I didn't because I knew no one there. But now, It least I know Ray & Mike, Millard & Ginge & Pattie. It wlil be a wonderful Christmas for me if I can go. So much for this
