UNITED CHINA RELIEF-OFFICE MEMORANDUM

To Miss Lee Ya-ching
From Marian Cadwallader
Date August 28th, 1942
Subject

The September first and second events have been arranged by Mrs. Wellington, of the New York City Committee. Up until now I know very little about them, but have a bit of information I am supposed to pass on to you. I should suggest that you talk to Mrs. Chu on Monday as she knows much more about it than I do. She has been working more closely with the Committee. As I understand it, some of the people of Southampton will be putting on a pageant for the benefit of UCR. This will be given twice - during the afternoon of the first and second. Some countess or princess or somebody will be in charge of these arrangements out there. They have asked that you and Mrs. Chu and I think the Consul-General and possibly Joseph Ku go out on the Long Island Railroad train leaving Pennsylvania Station at 9:51 a.m., arriving at Southampton at 12:08 noon on Tuesday, September first. You will return on Wednesday night, the second, leaving Southampton at 7:50 p.m..

This morning we mailed you your invitation from Dr. and Mrs. Nicholas Murray Butler to be their guest at luncheon, and also the copy of the letter sent by Mrs. Chu accepting for both of you. This sounds like a delightful series of events and I believe you will enjoy being a part of it.

You are booked on September 15th to be the speaker for the Kiwanis Club luncheon at Orange, New Jersey. We have had a request for you to speak on September 18th and will discuss this with you when you come in. On September 21st you and Mrs. Chu are asked to be honor guests in Philadelphia at a meeting at the Snellenburg Store, which will be for the purpose of publicizing UCR. I think a luncheon precedes the afternoon meeting and tea. Mr. Ekins is very anxious for you to go down for this event. You will need to be there only for the one day. Possibly there will be a meeting for you on September 14th in New Jersey, but we are not sure yet. Please do not accept anything else on that date until you hear from me further. On September 29 you are scheduled to go to Fitchburg, Massachusetts, for a society party. Mr. Ekins will tell you more about that when you return.

I hope you have had a wonderful time on this last trip to Maine, and that you will be fully rested and ready for very hard work.
