UNITED CHINA RELIEF - OFFICE MEMORANDUM

To Lee Ya-ching Date March 26, 1943
From Edward M. Ballin Subject Chicago and Milwaukee

You will leave LaGuardia Airport at 12:25 p.m. on Monday, March 29th, on TWA, arriving in Chicago at 5:01 p.m. You will stop at the Morrison Hotel in Chicago. On Tuesday afternoon, March 30th, at 2:00 p.m., you will be on a broadcast over station WJJD. It will be an interview, and they have prepared a 10-minute script for you. At 8:30 that evening, you will speak at the Morrison Hotel at the big meeting sponsored by B'nai B'rith and various local civic and patriotic organizations. Others on the program will be Hon. Margaret Bondfield, Member of Parliament from England; and Prof. Boris Furland of Yugoslavia. Each of you will be allotted 25 minutes. You are to speak on "China Today," and the type of talk is up to you. They would no doubt be interested in hearing about the war in China today, and also about reconstruction work now and in the future. They expect a minimum attendance of 1000. The meeting here and in Milwaukee will be very well publicized and they have the backing of various public officials, such as the Mayor of Chicago and the Governor of Illinois. The purpose of these meetings is to make the people in these "isolationist" sections of the country more aware of what is taking place during the war and educate them as to the reasons for the war. The contact in Chicago is Mr. Max Kroloff, 130 North Wells Street (telephone: FRanklin 2221). Attached is a memo from Miss Jorzick about people you may want to contact in Chicago in connection with UCR. The only other name I could find is that of the former Regional Director, Mr. M. N. Brady, United States Rubber Company, 440 West Washington Street, Chicago, Ill.

On Wednesday, March 31st, you go to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for an 8:30 p.m. meeting at the Hotel Schroeder. This meeting will be of the same nature as the evening meeting in Chicago and will have the same purposes. It is just a quick trip by train from Chicago, and you will no doubt want to go up with the other speakers, as the same speakers will be on this program as on the other. You can go up on the Milwaukee Road, and one good train leaves Chicago at 1:00 p.m., arriving in Milwaukee at 2:15. The contact in Milwaukee is Mr. Morris Jacobs, 2667 North 45 Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The man who has made all the arrangements with us is Mr. Maurice Bisgyer, Secretary, BInai B'rith, 1003 K Street, Washington, D. C.
