Dear Mr. Chen,

I have received your letter of June 9, also the six volumes of the New publication which you and Dr. Kung have so graciously sent me. I am deeply indebted to you and to Dr. Kung and at you next opportunity I would appreciate you personally thanking him for his thought.

I was not informed about this magazine and I welcome it. I have already read the May issue and found it a welcome answer to many current questions. It would prove mentally stimulating. Again, my thanks.

I am taking pleasure in furnishing you with the following names of friends of mine:

These names should prove helpful. They are people who either have been to Asia and formed a lasting admiration and friendship for China, or are people who have definitely radical sympathies and would be interested in anti-Japanese viewpoints.

I hope this will help you. I share you aneiety in Far Eastern matters and pray with you that the forces of liberalism, and democracy will triumph, not only in China but also in Germany, Austria and Spain.

With warm greetings,

Sincerely yours,
Helen B. Goldbacher.

Dear Sir:

Upon my return from England, I find your esteemed favour of June 1st. In this you advise you are sending forward certain copies of the PACIFIC DIGEST. Mr. Cushman and I will appreciate the opportunity to read these articles and I would be pleased to make up a list of names of friends who we thank would be likely to be interested in the authorative opinions which you are making available. I am only just back from abroad and have not yet seen my mail, but will write you a letter in regard to these special articles.

I am pleased that you refer to Dr. H. H. Kung. Mrs. Cushman and I have thought of him and Mrs. Kung many times during these tragic months. We have felt a heartfelt sympathy for all of you in the ordeal you are suffering. But we are convinced that a nobler, more truly tempered China will emerge from the fire.

Yours very truly,

James S. Cushman.
