Dear Mr. Emery,

Regarding the question you asked me about the portrait of "John of Nassau" by VanDyck which is now in the Museum, upon looking up some old records I find that it was originally in the Balbi Palace in Venice. It was sold by the then owner in 1807 when it was purchased by Lord Radstock, who subsequently disposed of it in 1826, when it was purchased by Alexander Baring, Earl of Ashburton, from whom Scott and Powles acquired it.

It was exhibited in the Old Masters Exhibition in London in 1890 and also in 1900. It is recorded in Waagen's "Art Treasures of Great Britain" vol. 2, page 103, and likewise in Smith's Catalogue Raisonné, XXXI, in vol. 3, page 106.

It occurred to me that you might like to have these particulars.

Taking this opportunity to tell you how much I enjoyed myself the other evening at your house, and wishing both Mrs. Emery and yourself the Compliments of the Season,

                           Believe me to be
                                 Yours sincerely,
J.J. Emery, Esq.,
