Hotel Ritz, Paris June 15, 1972 Dear Mrs. Cooney, Thank you for your letter of June 13th from which I am glad to learn that the work of the catalogue is progressing satisfactorily. Herewith you will find a heavy load of photostats, as well as a manuscript note from Mr. Baderou, all referring to five drawings by CHARLES MAURIN which you will receive bye-and-hye. As we know little about this Charles Maurin, this documentation will be of much help to explain his background. As you will recall, some time ago, I asked you to file articles on this Rose + Croix movement, partly Symbolist and leaning strongly towards the Pre-Raphaelites. I want to call your attention to the fact that the titles given those five drawings will most probably have to be revised. For the manuscript note from Mr. Baderou, your may need Mrs. Halpern's help in deciphering it. With all good wishes, Notes made by EJS on - Review by Maurice Giralof Exhibition- "Au Salon de la Rose + Croix" - 6eme Salon, Galerie Petit. In "L'Artiste", March, 1897, p.200 "M. Maurin a trois tete d'une belle facture, amis il se moque de nous en appellant "L'Initiee" une sorte de gitana truculemment gorgiasee." Mr. Giral evidently also a rosecrucienne. Above only mention in review of Maruin - only other name I recognized among exhibitors was Marquet de Vasselot who showed two sculptures- portraits (?) of Lamartine and Musset. All subjects very romantic or mystical or historical. Baderou notes: *1- Notes of EJS- could not locate any Rose-Croix cats. *2- Bernheim Jeune Exh. - stat enclosed of catalogue. *3- Natanson- Stats of pertinent pages enclosed Also stat of review by Arsene Alexandre- re Bernheim Exh.
