SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION
BUREAU OF AMERICAN ETHNOLOGY
WASHINGTON, D.C.

May 1, 1907.

My dear Dr Pepper;

I beg to extend my thanks for the two most interesting papers you were kind enough to send me. I am particularly interested in the decorated bone scrapers. The human effigy jars are also of great interest. What great fields yet remain to be explored, and some gentlemen of the Congress say "Surely the Bureau of Ethnology must have exhausted the Indian history, and the ruins of this country."

I returned only a short time since from New Mexico where I spent fourteen months. Nine months were consumed studying the Taos Indians, where I had splendid success.

With all good wishes for fine results in your future work I remain very truly yours

Matilda Coxe Stevenson
