Jackson, Miss May 29th 1866 Amos Drane, freedman of Canton Miss. voluntarily appeared at this office and made the following statement. On Monday, the 28th inst. I was arrested by the Sheriff of Madison Co. and taken by him to the Court house at Canton, and there charged by Mr. Luckitt and others with making a false statement in regard to the origin of an[[strikethrough]]d[[/strikethrough]]alleged outrage committed by Mr. Luckitt upon the person of a Mr. Fultz, on Friday the 11th inst. at Canton, Miss. I replied that the information given by me to the officer investigating the case, was the truth, & that I could not deny it. Mr. Luckitt then read a paper which he said he wanted me to swear to denying the statement already made by me, and justifying his action in regard to Mr. Fultz, this I said that I could not do, he then asked me to swear that I believed Mr. Fultz had been guilty of inciting a freedman in Mr. Luckitts employ to murder him and his wife, this I said I could not do, as I truly believed Mr. Fultz innocent of any such charge, and that I believed Mr. Fultz to be an honest man, and never heard him use any language tending to cause any difficulty between the whites & freed men of Canton.
