Did S.M. Hankins shoot an old crazy woman whom he found in his orchard was he discharged upon his own statement.

S.M. Hankins did shoot an old crazy women whom he found stealing peaches in his orchard. I went with the Sheriff to Mr Hankins the next morning heard his statement which was this he had been robbed night after night and he stood guard that night. heard somebody get over the fence. he ordered them to halt twice the party ran and he shot. The person stoped and he found out that he had shot this old woman

I then in company with the Sheriff visited the old woman we examined her found some of the shot "bird shot" had just penetrated the skin. She seemed to be in pain in her bowels, but could see no evidence that the shot had penetrated there. I made arrangements with a colored family to take care of her, but was told several days after that she had got away from them and was lying naked under a tree on the bank of a creek some ⅓ of a mile distant. I visited her and found her nearly dead a colored woman was with her trying to get her to come back to the house and endeavoring to get her to eat, but she would do neither and died the next morning. She had been in the habit of living in an old locomotive [[found?]] and going nearly naked for the past year
