Lieutenant - In accordance with Special Orders No. 60. par 2. dated Dec 23, 1865, during my visit to Lauderdale, Miss., on the 2d instant, I made an inspection of the Orphan Asylum at that place. I ought here to state, that it had hitherto been impracticable for me to make the tri-monthly inspection of this institution contemplated by the Order, during the short period since the Asylum was opened; and there has been no officer on whom I could call to do the duty for me. It was the less necessary, because the Asylum was only in the process of formation, under the eyes of Gen. Thomas and Dr Wood, who did all they could to make it efficient.

The barracks that are appropriated to this Asylum are quite sufficient for the purpose. Some of the buildings were plundered of
