Ounalaska Is - May 17 1877

The wind died away in the morning and we lay becalmed until afternoon when a westwind sprang up against which we are beating- We lay off Akouna Is all day-

Many waterfowl were seen about the boat but no species not noted before The dark colored petrels (Leaches?) were observed in large flocks.

Several Sea Parrots [[image - sketch of a Parrot's head]]] were seen also-

Along the sides of the bluffs are streaks of red probably Hematite iron ore from which the natives make a red paint. They also make a black paint from plumbago which they find on the Is-

Arrived early in the morning A strong wind arising in the night and blowing all the next day.

Went out shooting in the afternoon - killed 2 Eiders ♂ [[male]] & ♀ [[female]] , which I have not yet identified. The species is common in Dutch Harbor I also obtained a small auk (      )  and 2 juv. specimens of Larus leucopterus

The specimens are in nearly adult plumage but on one there is only a trace of the red spot on the lower & mandible and in the others it is about 1/2 the size of the same spot in the adult.  Around the head land beyond [[strikethrough]] Caplan [[/strikethrough]] Dutch
