from a paved red lava road (the road itself- how interesting a color). Bachelor Butte-dark, towering, close. An "alpine" meadow with green grass and a rushing brook. Elk Lake with its many campers & boats. Pine Lake, for a view of the mountains. But it was dry hot country, with stunted pines, and rather impersonal. So back to the meadow for lunch - made a fire under the pines & washed in the cold brook. Then to Todd Lake just up the road - a very picturesque setting. Then back to Bend (ugly turn!) & on a long 20-mi. stretch to Sisters - with fine view of the 3 Sisters & Broken Top on my left. Found a motel on the edge of Sisters for the night (Sisters Motel) with a very beautiful open stretch of green fields behind, capped by Broken Top & the 3 S. in the evening clouds gathered & disappeared & the low golden light outlined the hay bundles & the barns & trees & the sharp ridges of the mountains. One of the best panoramas of the trip. And the best motel.

(The outstanding event & view of the day -
rode the ski lift up 7000+ ft to near the top of Bachelor Butte - to see the stupendous peaks of the Sisters in stark dark & white. Walked over snow & very rough lava [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] at the top.)

Monday July 18. From the motel grounds - the mountains in morning light. A bright day. Felt compelled to see McKenzie Pass again. (like seeing Dark Harbour the second time on Grand Manan. Drove the 15 miles to the Dee Wright observatory.
