The Summer of 1971 1

(To Monhegan)

Left N.Y on Sunday May?, on the 9 am Greyhound, and returned on the Monday boat, arriving in NYC (around midnight the on the Greyhound - [[strikethrough]] May [[/strikethrough]] June 7

On the 10th of [[strikethrough]] May [[/strikethrough]] June - left Kennedy on a United 707 at 11 am (stopping at Seattle for an hour) - reaching Portland (PST) 3:15. There to be met by Scott Soninkses & Fred Kline. The Cascades en route were almost totally obscured by a total layer of very white clouds with the bright blue sky arching the edge of the world. The view from the plane was not unlike that of a vast richly rolling sea

Stayed overnight at the Roosevelt Hotel & went to bed, exhausted, at 9 30 pm.

11th The next morning, after a big breakfast downstairs, we attended the rose show up the street (good specimens). Then saw the Portland Art Museum exhibits - ran into Dr. Newton on the sidewalk. After lunch & some shopping & wandering around the streets, I got a car at Avis - a Hornet ($7 + 2 + 1 a day, + 11 [[cents]] a mile + my own gas), & off we went to the Western Sea! A long but easy drive to Tilamook, then to Oceanside, to the motel Fred had suggested "House on the Hill"-
