Monhegan--a day. Aug. 3 68
the day started out sunny and cool, then turned warm and humid.
I changed from white levis to shorts at 11. continued work on new 40x40 canvas, black and white acrylic, of island and stars, from drawing of last year and from oil of this summer. working on floor, and enjoying it. ptg. looks very promising. to avoid color? does color separate space too much?

when we were finishing breakfast, Zero and Herb dropped in just to sit. they were served instant coffee. both very funny, as they carried on. They admired the rose in bottle on table--it was a fine Valencia, in perfect form. I talked with Mel Gussow by the road.
for lunch we had the left-over paella, and beets and beet greens, anda salad of bibb and ruccola, and parsley, and cress, and excellent mixture. after lunch on porch, I played the recorder (Tellemann, Corelli), then Barbara Stanley appeared to ask for dill. Curt Harnack arrived to ask for advice on his garden, and I gave him some Fasgro and nitrogen. Zero invited us over for after-dinner to meet Ring Lardner Jr. and wife. Worked on painting. Hortense came over at 3 to ask us over for after-dinner to meet Leslie and Jane Katz. It would have to be after after dinner. I went over to give Kate Mostel some vegetables for her capon dinner, and lent her a baking pan.
Then she came over to ask us for dinner at 6.30, as Tobey and girl friend wouldn't be eating with them, and there would be 2 extra places.

Fog blew in swiftly on a southeast wind at 4. A gull flew low and all around our house, looking for something. The Shirley poppies are in bloom, each flower unique and dainty. Met Ring Lardner in our garden as he was on way with Zero to Zero's house. Gerry strummed her guitar upstars, and sang. Marjorie Pratt came over to give us a loaf of [[strikethrough]] sourdough bread she had baked. I gave her some basil and parsley and savory.

how beautiful the light is, as it filters down through the fog. Manana is invisible. I'll take some flowers to Mostels--liatris, feverfew, rose campion, scabiosa, and achillea.
