Sun Aug 24 '69 The summer draws to a sad close. It's in the air, in the browning meadows, & in the rush of social activities. Up at 9, with the urgent thot [[thought]] of going to Seal Ledges, as the tide would be low around noon & the day fair. Went to Obermans before breakfast to ask them. Got going at 11, & had a fine time sketching (borrowed ink from Frank Metz) who was there,) gathering laver, mussels, etc. & wading. McCartins & Martins also there, by coincidence. Good lunch - fried beef sandw., cuc., zucch., beets, beans, and tofu from Arline. Also fruit. Home by 3 to get ready for next affair. The surprise (& sad, tasteless, dull) party for Hantmans. Took bowl of salad greens & dressing. Home at 9:30. Moon over water. The cricket chirped all night.

Mon 25 - Dep. [[deposit]] check for 4500 in sav. bank. Part of 5000+ check from life insurance - 20 yr endowment, bot [[bought]] in 1949! Edgar came for a zucchini for tonight's dinner. Miriam Alberts (with Arline) came to admire the orange floribundas (Woburn Abbey & Zambra) which indeed are putting on quite a display. Zero dropped in at 1:30 for a [[strikethrough]] cup [[/strikethrough]] bowl of moule mariniere. In afternoon, a series of visits: Mo Oberman, then Peter Heffelfinger & friend Deborah, then Gerry Wolfe & friend Cecilia. At 5 a series of blurred cold-front clouds swept over from the N. west, bringing strong wind gusts, then lightning & thunder, & finally a heavy deluge of rain. So much rain the road was swamped in a few minutes. It lasted for an hour. a really heavy rain. We managed to get over to Semple's - there for dinner - avocado with salmon, chicken "a la Cordon Bleu", flan, etc. (cassis, wine, a liqueur) Home by 11 - saw the moon set at 3 over the S.W. sea.

Tues 26th A good day. With Obermans to Gull Cove There to see the abundance of algae at a low low tide (saw John Bill) Got bags of laver, Irish moss, & kelp. What browns & reds! The colors of the submarine world. Thru path behind rocks to Burnt Head. Picked apples from tree beside well. Hurried to get ready for Hunter dinner. A bag of greens. Good food. Mostels, McCartins, Doug & Harry Loews (At 3 am the most beautiful ocean in moonlight from bathroom)
