Tues Sept 9. The day of Gerda, the hurricane. An eerie calm at 11 am. A light rain all morning. Picked the last 3 ears of corn at 11:30. To p.o. to mail some letters at 12:30 - talked with Betty Ebert, Lorimer, & Noel Boxer - no one seemed too excited. To Store - most of course submitted opposite opinion - "nothing to worry about" - Mollers there, a bit concerned. Doug asked about date of '54(?) hurricane when he'd come down to dock & got us up the hill. At 1 - checked on loose boxes etc in back. Rain increasing - & a wind began to blow, but only slightly - Brought in roses [[strikethrough]] Lunch - soup [[/strikethrough]] Rain got heavier - at 4. decided to bring in porch chairs At 5 - signs of a real storm. Donned raincoat etc. & went over to Herb's & Henry's to remove loose blocks, a garbage can, etc., & got thoroughly wet. At 5:30 packed emergency bag, & taped large windows. At 6 - rain - heavy, from n.e., and a very strong wind bending the spruces & weigelias as I prepared Supper - steak & rice & malabar spinach & a lettuce-fennel salad. Then at 6:30 the wind died down & the rain stopped, only to resume at 7, for 5 minutes.- Then the skies cleared! At 7 the sunset glowed at the top of Manana. At 8:30 the stars came out, and Mars shone in the southern sky, near Scorpio. All is calm; it is 9 pm, I removed the tape.
