Wed 9/10 - A turning inward - thoughts and reviews and questions and evaluations. After breakfast, to Lobster Cove - a good surf, and some drawings of surf. To P.O. and then to Burnt Head - sketched surf in different media, & got at least one good drawing. Enough accomplishment? Talked with Casses, who'd been watching me sketch. Found some good golden chanterelles under the spruces. Home for spaghetti with clam sauce, & chard. Alone, listening to FM radio and reading on geology.

Thurs 9/11 - Feeling tired - a cold coming on? Excellent weather - spending too much time thinking about art, life, the future, etc etc. In late afternoon to rocks [[strikethrough]] above [[/strikethrough]] between Crow's Nest & road - did some lousy drawings - but enjoyed the open meadow & the look of the sea. In eve. after supper, worked on w.c. of moonlight.

Representing the subject is futile - it gives no scope, no life beyond the look of the subject itself. Art [[strikethrough]] lies [[/strikethrough]] begins when there is emotional strife in the execution of the subject, & when there is conceptualization - and forays into the unknown!

Fri - 9/12 - good day - letter from G., to store for chicken - (rosemary, tomatoes - for supper) (& spag. with pesto!) To the rocks below Burnt Head - beautiful place of rocks - [[strikethrough]] which [[/strikethrough]] some good drawing - picked apples from tree by well - picked some tomatoes from Arline's garden. After supper - worked on moonlight w.c. All I said yesterday is so true - & useful.

[[margin]] * Geology [[/margin]]
Sat 9/13 To library at 2 to read on Monhegan geology. Monhegan's mass is olivine-noryte, "rich in feldspar," with rock of granitoid. An area confined to Pebble Beach, & north, is hornblende-gabbro. The north section, 1/4 of island, from Seal Ledges to Black Head, is gabbro-diorite. The rest, south 3/4, is olivine-noryte. Two kinds of dikes: acid dikes & basic dikes.
