there was hardly anyone there, so the immensity & the utter desolation of the 360° view was more personal today. Sketched from the top of the observatory. Wide wide immensities of lava all around, and the peaks sharply rising. The Sisters. Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington, Belnap Crater, Little Belnap crater, Black Butte. (And a fleeting glimpse thru [[strikethrough]] ha [[/strikethrough]] clouds of Mt. Hood, 78 mi. away.) My years are defined by such a view, but such an experience. A new landscape for me, and yet I am taken back to Haleakala and the Kau lava desert (1938, 1940). One of the most significant places [[strikethrough]] to see [[/strikethrough]] I have ever been.

Then back to the village of Sisters for gas, and down to springs of the Metolius, Camp Sherman, the magnificent stretch around Santiam Pass (great scale: trees, shoulders of mountains) Lost Lake Park for lunch, Lost Prairie state park (trees!) Soda Springs, to back to Corv. at 7pm after 120 miles today.

Tues. July 19. Lesson on landscape ptg [[painting]] in class. Evening: a stimulating time at Earl and Marlene Linderman's. Good discussion on ptg [[painting]] and art teaching. (OSU pay check: to bank).

Wed. July 20. To Albertson's Market for groceries for tomorrow's big dinner party. [[strikethrough]] To [[/strikethrough]] Painted at home.

Thurs July 21. Over big dinner for: Paul & Rikki Green, Shep & Gloria Levine, [[strikethrough]] Munro Earl & [[/strikethrough]] Alan and Saundra

Transcription Notes:
The "Belnap" craters he's talking about are actually spelled "Belknap".
