STATE OF TENNESSEE
OFFICE OF
COUNTY COURT CLERK
WASHINGTON COUNTY

JESS G. SMITH, CLERK

JONESBORO, TENN.

April 10, 1924.

Mr. G. H.Pepper,
Heye Foundation,
New York City.

Dear Mr. Pepper;

A short while ago a friend wrote me that he would send me a nice white Flint Spear-head. I immediately instructed him to pack it securely and send it by insured parcel post. In a few days later I received the package. You can imagine my sore disappointment upon opening it and finding he had wrapped one little piece of thin paper around one of the finest Spear–heads I ever saw, another piece of thin paper around a very pretty pipe. These two beautiful specimens were placed loose in a cigar box with a rough 4 1/2 or 5# stone axe.

The box had a wire wrapped once around it's center and placed in a paper meal bag and shipped by open mail - no insurance. Well, the Axe bursted [[burst]]] one end of the box, the pipe was broken (a clean straight break) in two, and the fine Spear–head was broken into four pieces.

I get sick every time I think of the stupidity of the [[mase?]].

Now, Mr. Pepper I can mend these relics so the breaks will scarcely be perceptible, if you will kindly inform me as to where I can procure a cement that will actually and permanently cement stone relics. I will greatly appreciate the kindness.

With all good wishes for the success of the “Heye Foundation,” I am,

Very sincerely,

Chas. S. Mason.
