Gen Gillem
Sir This will be handed you by my Freedwoman Emily Gibson in returning to Mississippi at the close of the war one of my Freedwomen concluded to remain in Columbus Georgia to educate her children she died of small pox and has left her children dependent and destitute Their father was a faithful Slave and my children very much attached to him he died 4 yrs ago

The failure of my crop places it out of my power to go for them I wish you to send Emily for them for me they will be no charge on the Government as I will raise them and tend them carefully I hope you will have them brought home.

For my ability to raise and take care of them I refer you to the Rev C R Marshall Gen Dick Mr Arthur, and any other leading man in Vicksburg

Respectfully
Mrs C S Tarpley
